I don't "believe". I either know, or I don't.

Comic-Con 2008 Poster

"Not a Flash, just a Still Image"

date: July 18, 2008

I'm sure I don't need to review this for you, of all people, Tom. It is 'your' newgrounds, but since you gave me a review button, I must insist. :^p

[+] The art is supurb and it's a great poster. Opening up a page to the character's flash was about the only redeeming "flash" quality.

[-] The "flash" part is practically non-existant. There's no music/sound and a mere name pops up when you scroll over a character. The collision area for the character's button could have been illuminated when moused over to show where one character begins and ends under another character. The name could have opened up a menu to detail more than just a name, including the character's creator, date of creation, maybe some history or author notes.

While I appreciate JohnnyUtah's efforts and art, there just doesn't seem to be much demonstrated effort to make this worth being a flash rather than a photoshop with some hyperlinks.

How 2 Succeed on NG pt.2

"Funny! But, Counter Points..."

date: July 3, 2008

The drawings were very well done. Some of the animation was lacking... like your main character never blinked during that long segment. Some of the comedy was kind of miss... like the pronunciation of deux.

But, overall, I found it immensely enjoyable. "You can take that shit to the bank!"

===

Parodies are a good source for inspiration and come with an audience who knows what it is you're talking about, especially for the casual animator who isn't making a dime off of their past time in the first place. Originality is something that even Hollywood struggles with, and yet we're complaining to unprofessional, semi-casual animators here.

Both my brothers and my sister can't say a line with any emotion at all. Using "the same 5 voice actors" is far more welcome than having someone who can't voice act lose their intended character because they sound goofy. Most people on Newgrounds don't have a budget, writing staff and office building for their flash production.

Scary Movie and crew are really bad parodies, but there are also good parody movies as well. I'd cite Austin Powers as an example. It's simply what you do with the source material and how you make a joke.

===

I'm not taking the flash "seriously", but those were the things that I was thinking about inbetween chuckles. Hope to see more!

Button Ragz Treasure Hunt

"Nice wittle flash."

date: June 13, 2008

As much as I hate the word in all it's context, it was "cute". Good animation, fun rhyme.

But it leaves me with something to be desired. I'd certainly have liked something a that wrapped up with a bit more finality.

Super Mario World Ghost Remix

"Pretty good!"

date: August 6, 2008

The song sounds really good, especially the begining and escalation into the death/slash/whatever segment.

1:59 - The song gets really repetitive here. It'd be better, I think, if you revisited the build up elements but extended them for a while here before finishing with another round of the fast stuff.

Zelda Theme - Orchestrated

"I don't know that i'd call it classy..."

date: July 2, 2008

The song is pretty intact (compared to your Hyrule Field song... which disappeared?). I especially like the beginning and have no critiques with it.

0:30 - Pretty good. Some of the instruments have a good synergy going on that give it that Zelda quality. While it works, i'm not entirely confident that the... dominant horn like thingy is the best choice to accompany the drum beat. Then again, though, that might just be my taste in music.

0:54 - Right here it should be "du dun duh duuun" and it's just one "duuuun". Or it is so faint that I can't tell.

1:09 - Prior, the song feels like it's lacking something. Like it's a band where two guys haven't joined in yet. That's ok because the song is suppose to build up. But here, we get a bit of a squeaky sound (I don't know my instruments :^p) and some of the beats have a quickened effect... but it just doesn't strike me as the full "epic" blast I think we were suppose to get.

All in all though, a very nice track.

Author's Response:

Indeed it is your taste, I liked it. Also it does go "du dun dun duuun" at that point instead of just being one. I can hear it. o.o

The second part isn't supposed to be much different since I just looped it. I quickened the beats purposely. That weird squeking thing you hear is an added instrument.

Hmm, thanks for the review. I'll consider the changes but probably won't make most.

Zelda Menu

"Decent Enough"

submission: Zelda Menu
date: April 5, 2008

I downloaded the song and raised the tempo by 5% and found that the song paced much better as a result (imo). Certain notes, instruments or whatnot (i'm no musician) felt a bit weird and that's what is holding it back. For example, at 11.36 seconds into the song, it sounds like it "skips" and doesn't flow well. Some of the instruments sound like they sort of "pulse" or are a looped sound (if that makes sense) and hurts the clarity.

Hope that makes any sense.

Author's Response:

Yes, it does. Only problem is I'm not entirely any good at making a good sounding guitar artificially. I'm thinking of raising tempo up a little though.

I honestly think it could be a lot better, the guitar at least could. . Maybe I'll just Google for a decent Guitar VSTi that, hopefully, is either free or costs under twenty dollars. :o

Thanks for the review.
